  • Description: This photograph was taken from a hill on the south side of the river. It is the left portion of a four-part panorama. A mostly rural landscape is dominated by a building with a cupola and two flanking multi-story structures on a hill at left and several houses, including a large white house on a hill at right. At center, a series of pylons indicates the location of a former or future bridge.
  • Historical Note: Theodore M. Schleier, a photographer born in Prussia, is known to have worked in Nashville during the period from 1859-1869. This four-part panorama, taken in 1865, indicates that he may also have been active in Knoxville during the war years. In 1862, he married Caroline Knaffl, whose brothers ran a photography studio in Knoxville. Schleier's studio imprint, which indicated studio locations in Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga, can be found on cartes-de-visite produced during the Civil War, including portrait photographs of officers in the 1st United States Colored Troops Heavy Artillery, which was organized in Knoxville in 1864. This portion of the Knoxville panorama shows East Tennessee University, the predecessor of the University of Tennessee, on the hill at left.
