  • Description: Two men seated on camp stools face each other in a tent-like area, smoking. Both are wearing coats, light-colored trousers, and knee-high leather boots. Card is signed on reverse: "Very Truly Yours, James Walker."
  • Historical Note: James Walker (1819-1889), right, and Theodore R. Davis (1840-1894), left, were "Special Artists" for news magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly, illustrating activities at the front. This carte-de-visite is thought to have been made in Chattanooga. While their images were published contemporaneously with the events they depicted, both men are also known to have created later works of art based on their war-time experiences. Note what appear to be bullet holes in the canvas tent.
