  • Historical Note: This illustration by "Special Artist" Alfred R. Waud, depicts events occurring at the Battle above the Clouds. On November 25, 1863 Union forces under Generals Sherman, Thomas and Hooker attacked Confederate General Braxton Bragg's troops at Missionary Ridge along Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga. Sherman was out maneuvered by Confederate General Patrick Cleburne but later support from General Thomas carried the day. Artists like Waud could get closer to the battle than photographers, who were limited by their bulky equipment. Waud and Theodore Davis traveled the South after the War, including stops in Nashville and Memphis, to document the destruction and the process of rebuilding. Alfred Waud continued to produce illustrations for Harper's Weekly in the decades after the War. He also contributed to "Picturesque America" and to Century Magazine's "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War." The Library of Congress owns an extensive collection of Waud's drawings and sketches.
