  • Historical Note: Medical Doctor Charles T. Quintard (1824-1898) was the second Episcopal Bishop of Tennessee. With other prominent citizens of Columbia, Tennessee, including Bishop Leonidas Polk, Quintard founded an early Tennessee school for young women, the Columbia Female Academy. Quintard was rector of the Church of the Advent in Nashville in the years leading up to the Civil War. The prominent portrait artist, Thomas Waterman Wood (1823-1909), did a number of portraits of Nashville's elite during this period. Quintard served as a chaplain and sometimes also as a medic with a group of Confederate soldiers, the Rock City Guards, which was organized from Nashville and the surrounding area. After the war, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of the South, serving alongside several other former Confederate officers including Josiah Gorgas, who had been Chief of Ordnance, and General Edmund Kirby Smith.
