  • Description: This hand-drawn pencil and ink sketch depicts a city (Chattanooga) against a mountainous landscape. Two mounted soldiers and three standing figures are shown in foreground. Two long buildings that look like railroad depots or storage warehouses are shown at left. Signed lower left :"Theo R. Davis 1863"
  • Historical Note: Theodore Davis (1840-1894) was a "Special Artist" for news magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Leslie's Illustrated Weekly, illustrating news reports from the front. He was in the Chattanooga area in 1863 and 1864. The annotations on this drawing mention a limestone bridge and the Crutchfield House, as well as the Western & Atlantic Depot. The Western & Atlantic Railroad connected Tennessee to Georgia at Chattanooga.
