Description: This is a red velvet rosette made from a looped bow and attached to a card that reads, "Secession cockade, made by my mother and worn by me."
Historical Note: This red bow was worn by a Polk family cousin during the Civil War. Cockades like this, designed from sewn ribbons and sometimes including a central medallion, were often worn on the hat to symbolize one's allegiance to a cause, identified by the color of the cockade.
