Group includes older man in bowler hat, several African American women, one holding a small child, several women and children, and a middle aged man, possibly an overseer, standing next to a mule and a horse.
  • Historical Note: The William McKissack family, originally from North Carolina, moved to Spring Hill in 1834. They brought with them slaves who learned to make bricks. McKissack's brick yard supplied materials for this substantial house belonging to Nathaniel and Susan Peters McKissak Cheairs. Descendants of Moses McKissack, a former slave, formed one of Nashville's earliest architectural and engineering partnerships. McKissack and McKissack, still in operation today, is one of the nation's oldest and largest African American owned architecture firms.
