  • Description: Formal portrait of a young army officer facing to his right. He wears the one-star insignia of a Brigadier General.
  • Historical Note: An 1856 graduate of West Point, Captain Orlando Metcalfe Poe (1832-1895) served as Chief Engineer of the Army of the Ohio and was responsible for the defenses of Knoxville in November 1863. Poe also served under General William T. Sherman as Chief Engineer of the Military Division of the Mississippi during his Atlanta Campaign and the "March to the Sea." At war's end, Poe was "breveted" or given the honorary rank of Brigadier General, United States Army, for his superior service.
