- Historical Note: William Gannaway Brownlow (1805-1877), who was known as "Parson Brownlow" because he had been a circuit-riding minister, was an outspoken newspaper editor in Knoxville, Tennessee at the outset of the Civil War. During Confederate occupation of the city, Brownlow went north on a lecture tour, accompanied by his daughter, Susan. This novel, which was sold on his northern tour, contains an account of Brownlow's life as editor of the Knoxville Whig in Civil War East Tennessee, including his imprisonment by Confederate troops in the winter of 1861.
