  • Description: This shot, from a hilltop overlooking the Holston River, shows a free standing chimney in the left side of the frame, a soldier sitting with gun in hand on a pile of rubble in the right side of the frame, and a bridge spanning the river in the background. On the adjacent hilltop there is a fortification.
  • Historical Note: Barnard was a photographer in the Topographical Branch of the Department of Engineers, Army of the Cumberland, United States Army. He traveled to Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga in 1864. This bridge across the Holston River was critical to the movement of troops and supplies. It was one of those targeted by East Tennessee loyalist bridge burners in late 1861.
