Description: Bust-length black and white photograph of a young man with tiny spot goatee and neatly trimmed beard, facing to his left and wearing formal clothing consisting of a jacket, vest, white shirt, and black bow tie.
Historical Note: In 1858, young Frank H. McClung was a founding partner, with James Cowan, Perez Dickinson, and Charles J. McClung of the Knoxville mercantile firm Cowan, McClung & Company. During the Civil War, Frank McClung moved to Virginia to work with his uncle in the salt mining business. Even though the McClungs were known Confederate sympathizers and Perez Dickinson a decided Union man, the firm resumed operations as before at war's end.
