Title: Dixie for the Union
Description: Words by Frances J. Crosby and melody by Dan D. Emmett. This arrangement for quartet by S. Lasar. This sheet music depicts the Union flag with 34 stars and 13 stripes on a white background with blue lettering and red border.
Historical Note: The promotion of pro-Union sentiment in the South was a popular subject during the war. Frances Crosby's lyrics refer to a battle at South Carolina's Fort Moultrie, encouraging Union soldiers to "Remember Bunker Hill." The song is set to the tune of "Dixie." The 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies, while the stars represent the states in the Union. The 34 star flag was officially used between July 4, 1861 and July 3, 1863.
