  • Historical Note: Lucy Pettway Holcombe Pickens (1832-1899), of LaGrange, Tennessee, was married to South Carolina governor Francis Wilkinson Pickens, a former ambassador to Russia, when the Civil War began. The beautiful young First Lady of South Carolina is said to have sold jewelry given to her in Russia to support the Confederacy. Her image was used on dollar bills issued in 1862 and 1863, and on a one hundred dollar issued in 1864.
