Description: Printed sheet of names of persons who had "taken the oath" of allegiance to the United States on or after 16 January 1864.
Historical Note: This list of names, shown only in part, includes 280 citizens of Knoxville who swore loyalty to the federal government and its policies in the months following the defeat of Confederate forces in Knoxville at Fort Sanders in November 1863. Prominent railroad investor Joseph A. Mabry, who had outfitted a Confederate unit at the beginning of the war, is among those listed. The list also includes Charles McClung, one of the mercantile partners of Perez Dickinson, and C.M. McGhee, a Knoxville entrepreneur who had initially supplied the Confederacy with pork products. McGhee oversaw the consolidation of the East Tennessee & Georgia and East Tennessee & Virginia railroads in the post-war period.
