Historical Note: Hazen's Brigade Monument now stands in the midst of a national cemetery. It was built on a battlefield in the months following the Battle of Stone's River, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Named after William Babcock Hazen (1830-1887), a West Point graduate who commanded the unit, it is believed to be the oldest intact Civil War monument. Built of hewn limestone, by two German-American soldier/stonemasons, its location on the defense line held by the troops on December 31, 1862, was selected by Captain A. Johnson of the 9th Indiana Infantry to honor those men of the 9th who held the crest. Hazen's Brigade was also active in the January 2 fighting at Stone's River.
