Historical Note: This painting depicts Susan Penniman Dickinson (1823-1846) of Massachusetts, who married Knoxville businessman and transplanted New England native, Perez Dickinson, in 1845. A substantial two-story white house is shown in the background. This may have been a posthumous portrait, since Susan Dickinson died from complications of childbirth in August 1846. Artist Samuel Shaver, who moved to Knoxville in 1859 from Rogersville, is known to have painted portraits of a number of distinguished East Tennessee individuals.
