Historical Note: This house, which was built by Joseph Mabry circa 1858, is now known as the Mabry-Hazen House. It was the residence of R.S. Hazen, who was married to Mabry's granddaugher, Alice, when the image was taken for inclusion in "The Art Work of Knoxville," a book published in 1895. The Mabry house, which was set on a hill with advantageous views of the city of Knoxville, served as a headquarters for both Confederate and Union troops during the Civil War. Joseph Mabry's wife, Laura Churchwell Mabry, sketched the remains of ditches and earthworks in front of this house soon after war's end.
