  • Description: A group of African Americans sitting and standing against a log fence. The group includes five middle aged men and women, a number of children dressed in light colored clothes and hats, and, second from left, Emmanuel Washington who was called "Uncle Man."
  • Historical Note: After the war, 16 former slave families returned to Wessyngton. This group of Washington family descendants includes at least one former slave, Emmanuel Washington, also called Uncle Man, who was the paid cook at Wessyngton Plantation after the Civil War.
