Description: Photograph shows a three-quarter-length portrait of a middle aged man in dress uniform. It appears to have been hand retouched.
Historical Note: Albert Sidney Johnston (1803-1862), a graduate of West Point who was there at the same time as Jefferson Davis, was a veteran of the War with Mexico and one of the most experienced of the Confederate generals. He was the highest ranking officer to die in the Battle of Shiloh on 6 April 1862. His close associate, Tennessee Governor Isham Harris, served on Johnston's staff. Johnston is purported to have given Sarah Polk's nephew, John Whitsett, Jr., a commission as drill sergeant. Whitsett served at Fort Donelson and survived the war.
