  • Historical Note: This image of Lookout Mountain depicts the route of Union soldiers, who came straight up the face of the hill by the Cravens House to capture the strategic location held by the Confederates. The Cravens House is shown here as just a foundation and chimney. Historian Jim Hoobler believes that Union troops stripped off the wood siding to keep as souvenirs of their heroic victory. The devastation that the war wrecked on the landscape is pictured here.
